re-rote (fronds)
2025
Pair of mechanically-controlled horizontal blinds with custom vinyl prints, epoxy putty, rotating motors, sensors, relay module, Arduino Uno
re-rote (fronds) revisits a previous work entitled Rote (2018), borrowing the original mechanism of rotating blinds while bringing the artist’s evolving interest in the relationship between technology and nature in the unseen automation of our surroundings.
The blinds feature microscopic photographs of a leaf skeleton on one side, while picturing the digital noise generated by the same images on the other. Employing the use of horizontal blinds, devices which border constructed interior space and the surrounding greenery outside the window, the work highlights the interpolation of natural and man-made environments. Rigged up to microcontrollers, motors and custom fittings, the blinds shift rhythmically, revealing and obscuring the view from the window while simultaneously completing and disrupting images on either side of the blinds.
Shown as part of Towards Happiness, Prosperity & Progress: Reflections on the Singapore Spirit, The Private Museum, Singapore from 2 Oct to 7 Dec 2025.
